Bronze Statues: An Overview

You’ve seen the artistic treasures of Rome and Greece. These artworks have heavily influenced the art of sculpture as we know it.

Probably the most common images that come to mind when you think of sculptures or statues are Renaissance pieces from the late 13th and early 14th century. During this period, thinkers and artists saw themselves as reawakening to the accomplishments of classical Roman culture.

The sculptors of the Renaissance  are known as among the most refined and detailed the world had ever seen.

However the art of sculpture dates back much further than the Renaissance and was common  in ancient Greece and Rome.

Statues in Bronze

A bronze sculpture, also known simply as ” a bronze,” is a three-dimensional work of art created by pouring molten bronze into a mold and then leaving it to solidify. Unlike the marble of antiquity, bronze is much more malleable and durable than stone.

Bronze is a copper-tin alloy created by heating and cooling the two metals simultaneously. In today’s world, metal can only be called bronze if it contains 88 percent copper and 12 percent tin.

Still, the composition of bronze that we use for artistic practices today varies greatly. The first ‘bronze’ products were made from copper and arsenic, and many ancient ‘bronzes’ were later discovered to be brass, an alloy of copper and zinc.

The process of molding and constructing these mammoth projects takes careful measuring. The smooth, heavy, and detailed object is the result of many hours of labor.

Bronze statues begin with a process called wax casting. First, the artist will carve their statue or image into soft wax which is then used to construct a mold. This mold is usually made of a composite material or concrete. After the construction of this mold, the addition of hot metal is added.

Once cooled, the material of the mold is removed, and the shiny, smooth molded surface can be revealed. The statue is then polished and cleaned to remove any excess residue or composite material.

An artist must truly be a master of several techniques to construct a flawless bronze statue.

Bronze Statues Today

Bronze statues are still widely used today to memorialize loved ones, pets, or experiences or to beautify homes, parks, and public spaces. Indoors or out, bronze statues add a touch of classic elegance anywhere they are placed.

While some of the most popular subjects in bronze are humans of personal, historical, or cultural significance, bronze statues also frequently represent wildlife, fantastical creatures, and figures from literature.
